Looking forward to baron rating Hillside Severn Surge

I feel really bad about this one. The lovely people at Hillside Brewery sent through a bottle of beer before Christmas and I've only just got round to saying thank you for it today.  I've been busy but that's no excuse. I've also not really been in the mood recently for 'baron rating' - think it's probably the post-Christmas blues as well as consuming probably far too many beers over the festive period.

Anyway I'd like to thank Hillside for sending through a bottle of their Severn Surge porter:

Hillside Brewery
  • Severn Surge - 5.4% porter, black in colour, smokey chocolate, coffee aroma, complex, smokey, roast malt flavour (it's almost like I don't need to baron rate it as the info is all there on the side of the bottle!)
Look out for 'baron ratings' of these beers soon, and a big thank you to Paul (@Hillsidebrewery) from Hillside Brewery for sending these through to me!

Looking forward to baron rating Hillside ales

I met Paul from Hillside Brewery back in May when judging at the SIBA Wales and West beer competition. He was showing us pictures of their barn conversion which looked like it was going to be an excellent bar, function area and a great addition to the brewery.

A month ago a box of Hillside samples showed up, here are the details:

Hillside Brewery
  • Jolly Jester - 9% Belgian style beer
  • Legend of Hillside - 4.7% English IPA, with a subtle honey flavour, and a strong hop finish
  • Legless Cow - 4.2% best bitter, has a rich caramel flavour with a smooth citrus hop finish
  • Over the Hill - 3.5% dark mild, a full bodied, single-hop malty dark mild
  • Pinnacle - 3.8% pale ale, great session beer leaving a fresh fruity finish
  • Summit - 4.9% ruby ale, a bold well balanced ale with rich malty flavours, deep caramel notes and a hint of toffee and chocolate to finish
Look out for 'baron ratings' of these beers soon, and a big thank you to Paul (@Hillsidebrewery) from Hillside Brewery for sending these through to me!

Looking forward to baron rating these Beer 52 ales

Beer52 were one of the companies involved in this years European Beer Bloggers Conference offering a sample box to all attendees (awesome!). The offer a Craft Beer Discovery Club, sending you a selection (8 bottles) of quality ales every month. My box arrived well-packed today, here is what was inside:

  • Black Wolf Coulls - 4.2% smooth, contemporary, premium craft lager. Chill for a while and savour the crisp, fresh and peachy flavours
  • Brewers & Union Steph Weiss - 5% weissbier
  • Cumberland Corby Fox - 4.7% full bodied deep reddish brown ale. Smooth with lots of soft fruit flavours
  • Einstok Icelandic Pale Ale - 5.6% pale ale, three kinds of hops combine with pure Icelandic water to create our version of the Pale Ale, where robust flavour meets smooth malt. Cascade hops give it the American character, while Northern Brewer and Hallertau Tradition add just enough bitterness to make this ale refreshingly Icelandic
  • Einstok Icelandic White Ale - 5.2% white ale
  • Hillside Centurion - 7% American IPA
  • Killer Cat Manga - 5%
  • Highland Orkney IPA - 4.8% IPA, two malts and six different hops compliment each other to create a flavour that is greater than the sum of its parts. Unlike most modern IPAs this has actually been on a sea voyage, albeit only across the Pentland Firth from Orkney
There was also an excellent info pack in the box, giving lots of details about the beers (more than was on some of the labels - see above).

Look out for 'baron ratings' of these beers soon, and a big thank you to Siobhan from Beer52 for sending them through to me!
