Baron on Tour: Liverpool Organic Brewery Tour

Liverpool Organic Brewery are not only a local brewery to me they are also one of my favourite. Source Deli in Ormskirk sells their excellent bottled range but I don't get to try it on cask that much - for some reason most of the pubs in Ormskirk never seem to have any on.

To remedy this situation a few friends and I decided to book on one of their brewery tour days. We arrived last Saturday just before twelve and around twenty to thirty people were hanging around outside waiting for it to start. Doors opened promptly at midday and we filed in, and handed in our tickets (well the group I was with did, I was fortunate enough to have my name on the guest list). We were handed a Product Range booklet and told to collect a branded pint glass (which you can keep if you wish) and approached the bar.

Five handpulls were available at a makeshift bar in the middle of the main brewing room served by various members of brewery staff including Paul Burns (deputy head brewer), Ben Topping (logistics) and Ron Kellett (delivery & logistics).
That wasn't the only selection, we were informed that there were also five additional casks of different ales in the next room which were gravity-fed and so you could help yourself to those as well.

Ten different ales is an excellent choice and they had a great mix of different styles and strengths to really show off what a quality brewery they are. After around 15 minutes I looked around and was amazed - the twenty to thirty people outside was only a small fraction of the total people who had now entered the building, I'm guessing that there were well over one hundred drinkers now in the building!

Once there had been time for everyone to have got at least one drink the managing director, Mark Hensby gave us some background about the brewery. They have now been open three and a half years, having originally dreaming up the idea of opening a brewery back in 2008, moving into unit 39 in April 2009 and then starting to brew on a tiny test kit in August 2009. By early September they were selling beer to local pubs.

Their 'two-year plan' was to be able to sell 69 barrels a week - they achieved this target within just two months! As of a fortnight ago they are now selling around 210 'firkins' a week (or '9s', the common 9 gallon casks that you see outside pubs). Also now that Cains Brewery has closed for business, Liverpool Organic are now the largest brewery in Liverpool!

They use Warminster Maltings for all their grain and they buy the organic variants that they grow/source. They use Charles Faram for their hops throwing in between four and six kilos at various stages of the brewing process.

Mark then went on to explain the brewing process but as I've heard this a number of times at other breweries I opted to start 'investigating' some of the other beers that I hadn't tried, here's a list in order of the ones that I got to try with a few random notes of mine against them:

Liverpool Organic Brewery
  • Bier Head - 4.1% best bitter, this was their old Higsons Bitter (until the owners of the name got funny and took it back), it's a really great solid bitter
  • Styrian - 4.2% single hopped beer (with Styrian hops) a touch of sulphur on the nose, balanced spicy caramel/honey taste with a zingy bitter finish
  • American Pale Ale - 4.4% fruity citrusy with a nice bitter finish. Very balanced, a friend who is not a fan of hoppy beers found this one as a lovely balance of the malt and hops
  • Liverpool Stout - 4.7% very black, liquorice & blackberry smell, velvety smooth mouthfeel with a fading finish, a solid slightly fruity stout
  • Liverpool Pale Ale - 4% really bitter puckering mouthfeel (grapefruit?), one for the bitter hop lover. Had a really nice bitter finish
  • Shipwreck IPA - 6.5% copper haze colour with a really tight creamy head. Tropical citrus bold sryupy aromas and tastes with a long resinous finish. It's got a big building bitter fruit flavour. This ale is one of my favourite bottled ales from Liverpool Organic and on cask it was amazing! A huge beer but very balanced and under control considering it's 6.5% strength - I ended up having a couple of pints of it
In the middle of trying all of the above ales was an excellent buffet lunch consisting of a large vat of Scouse with a healthy addition of some of their Liverpool Stout, a chilli with Shipwreck IPA added as well as a ton of sandwiches, wraps, sausage rolls and pork pies. There was plenty of food for everyone so that combined with the free bar meant that the normal ticket price of £20 was definitely worth it!

Last orders were around 3pm and we left around 4pm having had an excellent afternoon. I would recormend this event to anyone with even a passing interest to ale, and I'd like to thank Liverpool Organic Brewery for giving me a free ticket to the event. Of the people that I went with there is already talk of going again (they do these tours roughly every six weeks) and I'd be more than happy to pay £20 to repeat the day.

A brilliant event from a brilliant brewery - if you haven't tried beers from Liverpool Organic then you are simply missing out!

Baron on Tour: Waterloo Beer Festival 2012

Last night I headed to the station to attend the Waterloo Beer Festival arranged by Liverpool Organic Brewery. Forty-five minutes later I was walking towards Old Christ Church on Waterloo Road following a number of other likely candidates for a beer fest (you can always spot them - guys walking in pairs, one of which is holding a piece of paper). Due to Google maps looking like it was a bit of a trek I was there 10 minutes early but wasn't the first to be hovering around the door like a bar fly.

A quick nod and mention that I was the Baron meant that I was in through the door with a half-pint glass in hand. The beers were all £1.25 regardless of strength and all the beers on the list were available (and it's an impressive list).

I headed straight for Dark Star Hophead (3.8%) knowing that it would be the perfect starter beer and give me a chance to look over the beer list in the free programme. It was lovely: bright, fresh, zingy hoppy beer and so drinkable, an amazing session beer with so much taste.

Next was Black Iris Krasney Red IPA (5.3%) which was a nice dark amber colour with a candied and fruity taste and a slightly burnt big bitter finish - a great red ale.

I've been drinking a lot of RedWillow ales recently in bottled form bought from Source Deli so I thought I'd best try one of theirs, Headless was on, a 3.9% pale ale which had a nice bite and a bitter finish, again similar to Hophead as a really tasty session ale - brilliant beer.

Next was Hackney Hopster from London Fields Brewery, a citrusy slightly pithy 4.7% ale with a long bitter finish, a really cracker and I can't wait to try this in bottled form.

By now I was starting to get a bit hungry and the pie stand run by Peninsula Luxury Pies seemed the perfect option, they had an excellent array of pies and pasties, I opted for the pork & Branston pie and it was excellent. £3.50 got you a huge pie, I only managed 1/2 in the fest, the rest was consumed on the way home ;)

It was starting to fill up by this point, and a nice hum of chatter was happening in the room, I'd also met up with The Liverpool Craft Beer Co. and so was having a good chat to him & his brother. They are doubling the brewery's output very soon and have moved into the unit next door as well to help with the expansion. I've been promised that bottled versions of their ales will be 'available soon'...

Shortly after I noticed that Karl from Liverpool Organic Brewery had arrived, so I headed over to say thanks for putting me on the guest list and to chat about setting up for the festival. He mentioned that they had brewed a beer especially for the festival called Special 247 so that was my next ale. It was a rich hoppy beer and drank well over it's weight of 5%. Karl mentioned that it was particularly heavy on the malt for this beer hence the overall impression. Karl then had to get to work behind the bar so I opted for one of my favourites of theirs ShipWreck IPA - this 6.5% pale IPA is awesome, packed with citrus flavours and a good bitter punch in the finish.

I then found The Liverpool Craft Beer Co. again and proceeded to talk beer stuff and try a load of ales for the remainder of the festival, here are the other beers that I tried, all of them were absolutely spot on and in perfect condition:
  • Brodies London Fields Pale Ale - 4% crisp with a big lemon bite
  • Ironbridge Citra Noir - 4.7% black IPA, smooth with a roasted taste and a bitter citrus finish, reminded me of Windsor & Eton's Conqueror
  • Liverpool Craft American Red Ale - 5% amber ale with a slight lemony edge and some candied sweetness, big bitter finish
  • Redemption Bigchief - 5.5% IPA big full flavoured ale with a sweet fruity flavour
  • Saltaire Rye Pale Ale - 4.4% really tasted red ale, spot on!
  • RedWillow Ageless - 7.2% double IPA, sweet, rich, absolutely amazing (and was the finisher of the night)
I had a great night thanks to Karl from Liverpool Organic Brewery for inviting me, and was so good making new friends with The Liverpool Craft Beer Co. and his beer-loving brother - thanks guys you made my evening!

Liverpool Organic Meet The Brewery night at Source Deli

Head brewer Karl is on the right

A couple of weeks ago I attended the latest "meet the brewer" night at Source Deli in Ormskirk. This time it was Liverpool Organic Brewery's turn and head brewer Karl Ctritchey was there to talk us through a good selection of their bottled ales. The evening started at 8pm with an audience of around twenty people. We worked our way through a half of each bottle and my 'baron rating' bowls were used so that we could get a feel for how each beer was going down.

Here's the running order of the beers (with baron ratings where appropriate):

It was excellent to try the Josephine Butler as it was that new that the labels hadn't arrived in time! It was a good summer ale, quite floral (a bit too floral for me) but a lot of people, especially the ladies thought it was one of the best of the night.

Here are the 'baron rating' scores that people voted for:

Beer 5/5 4/5 3/5 2/5 1/5
24 Caret Gold 0 12 6 2 0
Honey Blond 1 11 8 1 0
Best Bitter 0 11 7 3 0
Josephine Bulter 8 8 3 2 0
ShipWreck IPA 8 10 0 3 0
Imperial Russian Stout 4 8 3 3 0

As the same as the Marble night, people could pick a bottle of their favourite to drink in or take home, I opted for the ShipWreck IPA but I did notice that a few went for the 8.1% imperial stout.

Thanks to Source Deli for putting on a great night and thanks so much to Karl from Liverpool Organic Brewery for taking the time to talk to us and share some of his beers.

Note: The laughter in the audio review when trying to open the bottle was due to my CellarDine ZapCap stainless steel bottle opener breaking and the neck & bottle top being trapped inside the opener and so we couldn't get the bottle open! CellarDine's customer service has been excellent and a replacement is being sent out within a day of reporting the breakage.

Note: I'd like to thank @BGRTRob from HopZine for coming over to Baron Towers to help Chris & I rate a whole loads of stouts, porters and collaboration brews, his expertise added loads to the reviews and we had a thoroughly excellent evening!

Baron on Tour: Liverpool Beer Festival 2011

I was lucky enough to get a ticket for the trade session of the Liverpool Beer Festival 2011 thanks to Source Deli & Liverpool Organic Brewery. We (Paul from Source Deli, Chris & I) headed off to Liverpool Catholic Cathedral on Wednesday night.

Inside we were presented with a wall of casks filling the entire wall of one side of the crypt. Only local beers were available during the trade session and any beer from the main sponsors, Liverpool Organic were free! Their beers were lovely (I've only tried one of theirs before) but we made sure we actually paid for some beer as well (I know that it's not the baron way though ;) ).

Here are a list of the beers that we (Chris & I) tried roughly in order:

My favourites from the ones we tried were Liverpool Organic's Shipwreck IPA & Blueball's Blonde Bombshell - both of them were outstanding and I've love to try them again.

After we left the trade session things started to get a bit blurry, we went to the Everyman for a pint (a very nice pint of Trappers Hat from Brimstage Brewery) and a bite to eat.  Paul from Source decided that Chris & I should drink something that wasn't from the UK or the USA and so forced these upon us:

I wasn't allowed the Brooklyn Lager they had on tap :(

We then ended up in The Dispensary where they had Stringers Pale Ale on, as we were with Jon & Becky from Stringers it would have been rude to not drink their beer! It was a lovely beer, crisp & refreshing with an assertive hoppy bite, I'm blaming it for the bad head I had the next day! ;)

Jon & Becky from Stringers

Looking forward to 'baron rating' Liverpool Organic Imperial Russian Stout very soon!

I dropped off some samples of Stringers IPA [baron rating 5/5] & Dry Stout [baron rating 5/5] last week at Source Deli in Ormskirk and co-owner Paul decided that a bottle of Liverpool Organic Brewery's Imperial Russian Stout was a suitable swap. I think so too:

Liverpool Organic Brewery
  • Imperial Russian Stout - 8.1% well hopped very full-bodied stout
Look out for the 'baron rating' for this Liverpool Organic beer soon, and a big thank you to Paul from @SourceDeli for handing it over to me!
