Looking forward to baron rating Green Jack Albion Mild & Lurcher Stout

Green Jack Brewery have very recently started bottling their Albion Mild and suggested that some should be sent through for a baron rating.

I've been very impressed with the previous Green Jack bottles that I've been sent, so I'm really looking forward to trying this one.

They also sent through a big 750ml bottle of their Lurcher Stout which has been out for a while but hasn't been baron rated yet. I know that Chris will be particularly pleased as he is my stout advisor as he loves the dark side:

Green Jack Brewery
  • Albion Mild - 3.8% full bodied mild,sweet & malty with a dry finish
  • Lurcher Stout - 4.8% stout, fruity, chocolaty, rich and fulsome, well-balanced with hops, yet so smooth
One nice thing with Green Jack bottles is the painted artwork on the labels, I think they are all painted by the same person and I love the detailed images, they make the bottles quite unique.

Looking forward to baron rating Green Jack Red Herring

I'm a big fan of the Green Jack Brewery and I've mentioned before that they are one of the brewing scene's hidden gems so when they offered to send some of their brand new "Red Herring" I didn't say no:

Green Jack Brewery
  • Red Herring - 5% fruity red ale with a dry smokey finish, brewed using locally smoked malt
Green Jack have such lovely tall bottles, the 750ml swingtop looks so cool and the labels are always really detailed, see if you can spot the redder of the red herrings on the label.

Looking forward to baron rating Green Jack Gone Fishing ESB

Green Jack are one of those breweries which don't get much talk on twitter and blogs but consistently produce great bottled beers (I've not had the chance to try any cask stuff yet).

Their Baltic Trader Export Stout [baron rating 5/5] is a strong weighty dark beer and by contrast their Canary Pale Ale [baron rating 5/5] is a light but full of taste pale ale.

We recently tried their bottle-conditioned Mahseer IPA [baron rating 5/5] and loved it so I was over the moon when they said that a big bottle of their Gone Fishing ESB was in the post. It arrived today perfectly packaged and looking amazing:

Green Jack Brewery

  • Gone Fishing ESB - 5.5% Extra Special Bitter, a strong, deep amber-coloured ale, fruity and malty very drinkable for it’s strength

Looking forward to baron rating Green Jack Mahseer IPA

I've baron rated a number of Green Jack brewery ales so far and have been impressed with most of them in particular their Canary Pale Ale and Baltic Trader Export Stout. They recently tweeted that they were bottling their Mahseer IPA and so I just had to try it! A couple of days later some samples of it arrived plus a lovely present:

Baron on Tour: AlesByMail craft beer & food tasting

I was lucky enough to be asked by Ales By Mail if I would like to attend their first craft beer & food tasting night held at the Mustard Bar & Bistro a couple of weeks ago. It was a six-course meal with each food item paired with a specific beer, here is the menu:

  • Sambrooks Wandle ale with homemade scotch egg & pork scratching
I'm not a massive fan of Wandle on it's own but with the food it was the perfect match
  • Pitfield Ginger beer with ham hock terrine & pineapple chutney
The ginger ale lacked anything exciting about it but was saved by the lovely taste of the terrine
  • Calvors premium lager with smoked bacon, brie & cranberry pie
A perfect match - such a lovely lager and amazing pie - yum!

  • Green Jack Canary Pale Ale with fresh mussels cooked in the same ale
I'm not a seafood fan at all but the Canary is an amazingly delicious beer and worked nicely with it
  • Meantime Chocolate beer with braised rib of beef, pototo puree, parsley & lemon
Although the beef was extremely tasty, I felt the beer stomped all over it and was too brutal for the savoury course
  • Stringers Dry Stout with chocolate truffles & peanut brittle
The stout was not a good match for the truffles but worked amazingly well with the nutty peanut brittle
It was an excellent evening, both Richard of Mustard & Paul from Ales By Mail did a great job talking us through the courses and the food & drink was lovely! A massive thank you to Paul for hosting the event & looking after me, I'd certainly recommend this type of evening if you are in the area. Also thanks to Brentwood Brewing Company for being such lovely people - I was sat with them and they had to put up with me! :D

Paul from AlesByMail mentioned a week or so ago that he was collecting together some of the newer stock on his AlesByMail website to send through for Baron Ratings. Well I knew the beers had arrived as I saw the courier struggling to carry the box down the drive on Thursday.
